Oregon vs. Penn State for the Big 10 Championship. Generic, all-white tradition vs. ever-changing black, bright green and chrome.
The Ducks potentially have 5 more games to play, and here are seemingly the only scenarios left from worst to best:
- 12-2: π΄π΄ Lose Big Championship, no bye and lose First Round
- 13-1: π’π΄ Win Big, get bye, lose Rose Bowl
- 14-1: π’π’π΄ Win Big, get bye, win Rose, lose Semi
- 15-1: π’π’π’π΄Win Big, get bye, win Rose, win Semi, lose Natty
- 16-1: π΄π’π’π’π’ Lose Big, win First Round, win Rose, win Semi, win Natty
- 16-0: π’π’π’π’ Win Big, Rose, Semi, Win Natty
The last time the Ducks and Nittany Lions faced off was almost exactly 30 years ago in the 1995 Rose Bowl. It was the culmination of—what many consider—the season that catapulted Oregon to the stage that it now sits on regularly.
Before 1994, Oregon had only tasted mild success in the early-mid 20th century. But, the midseason game against Washington and Kenny Wheaton's "Pick" really inspired the Ducks. Even with Rose Bowl records being set my the UO quarterback Danny O'Neil, the Ducks fell to the soon-to-be co-National Champs, unbeaten Penn State Nittany Lions.
Penn State 1994 and 2024 look almost identical since PSU is the textbook example of "less is more" and their uniforms are generic white and blue. And Oregon is the polar opposite in that they have not repeated a combination in a given season for years.
